When Mormon missionaries knock on your door, they will typically ask to come in to share a brief message.  Alternatively, you can request a visit from the missionaries.

What should you expect during these visits?

mormon-missionariesFirst, these young men and women want to get to know you.  So expect the normal introductory questions about family, work, or other activities.  Likewise, feel free to ask the missionaries questions like:

  • Where are you from?
  • How long have you been on a mission?
  • What do you like most about being a missionary?

After some time to get to know one another, Mormon missionaries will typically ask if they can say a prayer before sharing their message.  Since it is your home, you should absolutely feel comfortable asking one of them to say the prayer or offering the prayer yourself, if your prefer.

After the prayer, the missionaries will share the message that they have prepared especially for you.  These messages revolve around Jesus Christ and God’s plan for us and will be accompanied by the use of scriptures from the Bible and Book of Mormon.

This time is meant to be a discussion.  Ask questions when you don’t fully understand and expect the missionaries to ask your thoughts or feelings about what they’ve shared.

After 30-45 minutes, the missionaries will again ask to conclude the visit with a prayer and typically ask if they can set up another time in a few days to return.  They will also invite you to Church meetings and/or other activities that the local congregation is sponsoring.

How many times will the Mormon missionaries visit me?

As many as you’d like.  If there comes a time when you’d prefer to stop learning or discussing with the missionaries, simply express that concern.

However, if you want to continue to learn, missionaries will typically set appointments with you to return every few days with another message.  After a series of discussions, the missionaries will invite you to be baptized and become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  This is a very important step and the missionaries will encourage you to think and pray about your decision.
