FAQ

Below are some of the common questions I was asked as a Mormon missionary or have been asked since.  If there are other questions that are not answered, please contact me.

How much do Mormon missionaries get paid?

missionary-mormonsNothing!  Mormon missionaries are full-time volunteers.  In fact, Mormon missionaries are asked to pay a monthly amount that helps cover their housing, food and other expenses.

Then why do Mormon missionaries serve?

Because they believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring happiness to other people.  By serving as a Mormon missionary, these young men and women have the opportunity to share with others the truth that they have found.

How long do Mormon missionaries serve?

Young men, typically between ages 19 and 25, serve for two years.  Young women, typically between ages 21 and 29, serve for 18 months.  Retired couples serve between 18 months and 2 years.
How many Mormon missionaries are there?

At any given time, there are approximately 50,000 Mormon missionaries serving throughout the world.  In the last 175 years, approximately 1 million missionaries have served.

How do they become Mormon missionaries?

As young men and women approach the time they want to serve a mission, they submit an application to the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Before they do, the prospective missionaries meet with local leaders to ensure they are spiritually prepared, go to the dentist and doctor to ensure they are physically prepared, etc.

After the application is submitted, the leaders of the Church pray about where the missionary should serve his or her mission.  A couple weeks later, the prospective missionary receives a letter back from the President of the Church extending a call to serve as a missionary in a designated part of the world.

What training do Mormon missionaries receive?

There are a number of Missionary Training Centers throughout the world, with the largest being in Provo, Utah.  At this center, missionaries receive instruction on how to best serve and help people come unto Jesus Christ.

For those called to speak their native language on their missions, this training lasts about 3 weeks.  For those called to speak a foreign langugage, the training typically lasts between 8 and 12 weeks depending on the language.  At the time of leaving the training center, these missionaries have a basic understanding of the grammar and vocabulary of the language.
